Clash of Clans: Legend of the Last Lava Pup

For five days in December 2015, I had the pleasure of helping out on Psyop’s “Clash of Clans: Legend of the Last Lava Pup” spot, which ran in front of Star Wars in many theaters across the country. Up until that point, all the Clash spots had taken place on a lush green CG lawn, but “Lava Pup” called for an arid, rugged landscape matching the game’s War Base look. Using a procedural terrain building system in Houdini, I created all of the ground cover (pebbles, rocks, weeds, grass, etc) for every shot, with instanced geometry stretching all the way to the horizon. The results were exported to Arnold for rendering and integrated into the lighting for the characters and buildings.
